I'm assembling an album (photos in another thread) and have run into some difficulty determining which side of some notes are front/back.
Most I don't have a problem with... typically I look for the serial numbers and consider that the front of the note (is even this a safe assumption?).
Some notes don't use Arabic characters though, and I have a hard time determining front vs. back. Bangladesh, Egypt and Lebanon notes, for example.
Some notes have the SN on one side but the other side "looks" like it should be the front. Maldives, Myanmar & Qatar notes, for example. Maybe I just feel that way because on the side opposite the text is in English.
Some notes have a portrait prominently displayed on one side and the SN is on the other. Bulgaria, Serbia and Slovenia, for instance.
Any thoughts here? Is it safe to say the side with the SN is the front? If not, are there any indicators? Or is it random? What about older notes without SNs?
Questions, questions, questions...

On those that are questionable as to the front/back side, I try to find the note on another site that has them listed and use that as a guide. I've used several sites, but there are many sites out there that have a gallery of images. If one doesn't have it, another one will. If not, you can ask here and see what you get for an answer.

If you haven't a copy of Krause World banknotes, get onto Google Images, and look at other notes in the same series.

You can use banknote.ws
It is very accurate and up to date. The front is the first image and the back is the second image. For countries like Egypt it is usually Arabic front and English back.

Thanks for the suggestions! I don't have a copy of Krause although I've been considering it. Just don't know if I need more phone-book sized books in my house.

Good suggestion, techwriter. I'll look into that. I'm (somewhat) kidding about the phone books. I have the massive Red Book Deluxe edition and love having it.
