I have been saving pre 82 cents also and have approx. 25 lbs. If copper hits $4 a pound and they allow us to sell them to metal recyclers it might be worth the time spent searching rolls for them from a monetary perspective. otherwise it's just fun filling up coin folders for my grandkids someday.

Just can't see wasting my valuable time hoarding a pile of Copper cents. At one time I had hundreds of them. Sent the entire mess to some kid in some far away state as a giveaway. At about 12 yeasrs old, that's where they belong. When you get old playing around with a few cents, makes no cents. Time left if to valuable for a few cents. I could see it if your stone cold broke attempting to get a few cents extra from a smelter of Copper, but just not for me. Think I'd rather go without something.
Hey Chevrolet454ss. I'm waiting for the day when your answers are less than a novel or short story. Just kidding but I always wonder where you get the time to write those long post and still go through billions of coins.

Just entered this forum and am fairly new to collecting anyway. I know about older coins, values, etc. What's so special about just the Pre 82 date?

Here are some more details....pre 1982 cents are made of 95% copper and have roughly 2.1 cents worth of copper based on current metal prices. After 1982 they are 97.5% zinc and the metal value is minimal. In 1982 some pennies were made of the mostly copper composition and then they switched to the copper plated zinc we see today. Check out Deleted4 dot com for more info on metal values of US coins.

At what point do you think the government will start to pull the copper cents to melt, at which point they will start to become as scarce as the pre64 silver.
