I was looking at this 1879 and trying to see if there was any VAM's. Couldn't match it up to any. However the 8 on the left side looks like it had grease maybe? Any idea what VAM this is?

Can you post an image of the reverse too? I would guess that is needed for VAM identification.

Yes I can. Won't be able until tomorrow. Just never had seen a 8 that way and figured that's all that was needed.

The die chips in between the loops of 8's in the date is a rather common occurrence. They can really only be used to narrow down or help confirm a VAM. Not sure if they are more common or uncommon on certain years though. Post a pic of the reverse and maybe another of the obverse with less glare and more straight-on plus any other anomalous features you see and we'll try to narrow her down for ya

Try VAM 16. That's the only one showing a large chip on the 8 in the VAM Book. Available pictures aren't great, but the description should help.
