I have read the "what is a VAM" section and visited VAM World as well. Let me see if I understand what VAMs are.

If I understand correctly they are basically strike errors of different varieties correct? If so Then are all strike errors VAMs?

Since there are so many varieties it leads me to wonder if all Morgan/Peace dollars has a VAM number waiting to be assigned to it.

If a coin has a VAM and you don't find it but send it in to get graded will they recognize it and label it as such?

not being a VAM expert, I can only answer a few questions:
- VAMs aren't strike errors, think of it as die identification. They can pin down this coin was created using obverse die X and reverse die Y.
- when they were made, all Morgan/Peace dollars could be identified as a particular die pairing ( VAM), but due to circulation and handling many of the identifiers on a coin may have been destroyed or damaged.

Not sure about the last question

The answer to your last question is yes but only anacs. Anacs will research and attribute all vams for a fee (not just big list vams like other tpgs) and if you have an unidentified one John Roberts (head of anacs dollar department and a HUGE force in the VAM field) will have Leroy van Allen (the co-founder of VAM identification) research it to see if it's an unlisted die paring. Although I'm not sure if he would send it directly or if he has the submitter send it to him directly after encapsulation in such a case.

The comment about ANACS is correct. They are the only grading service that will do not only verification of VAMs, but also research into which VAM it is if you don't know but want to find out. Both are an additional charge beyond grading fees.

My service also does research and attribution of coins already in TPG holders as well as raw coins, and I'll put a label on them identifying the VAM. I am not a grading service, however.

PCGS and NGC will do verification of some VAMs, but not all.

Mont, fyi I answered about anacs because of the way you posed the question. However, I have never used anacs for morgans as I just don't like my morgans in anything but PCGS slabs generally which is why I wasn't sure about how J.Roberts handles unlisted vams.

Messydesk above runs VSS (www.varslab.com) and he is another of the HUGE guys in the VAM community. I use his service exclusively and imho he and his company are the best. In fact, I just had 2, a morgan & a peace, come back from him with instructions to send them to Leroy as they may be new unlisted additions and as my first potentially new finds I'm extatic. With him you get 1 on 1 service aside from just waiting a month and checking anacs site daily hoping for a phone call or update etc.

Also, if your getting serious about silver dollars and vams you should consider getting a 1yr membership to the SSDC for $22.
