I have this Lincoln Cent and recently photographed it. The coin over all is in excellent condition. The coin appears to not have been circulated. The patina is quite mottled almost diagonally banded - what causes this? I'm an amateur! Any opinions would be welcome and appreciated.

I believe that's from where and how it was stored. first thought was a woodie with environmental issues. Hmm

Thanks. I appreciate your post. I've had this coin for 25 - 30 years. The bad storage is on me.

OcalaFlorida had it right. Improper metal mixture gave the streaks prominence when the different metals toned. It is called a woodie affect as the streaks look like wood grain.
There are a good number of collectors who specifically look for goodies. It should not be cleaned, of course.

Two 31S KEY dates for you now and both VERY nice condition. I am envious.

Q: "What did it look like then? When you got it."
Thanks for your question. I posted two questions today, both about 1931 S Lincoln pennies. Around 1985 I bought both coins at the same time from the same person, whom I had confidence in. My recollection is that, at the time, they looked similar, both being a bit brighter.

To me, and by no means am I a grading expert, heck I do not even like slabbed coins, this coin looks like if it were professionally graded it would only get a details grade. It looks like it has been whizzed at one time. It has not been recently, because the patina has not been disturbed. But something looks off with this coin. I know there are a lot of MS examples of this coin because people hoarded them when they came out. This one just looks like it might have been whizzed to make it shinnier at one point.

The copper that is showing through is of the correct color, at least from the photos, and the luster appears to be unbroken, although it is a bit difficult to be certain with the wood grain look. From what I'm seeing I don't see any indications of cleaning.

Like I said, I am no expert. It just looks off to me. I have several woodies and this one just looks different

I agree with the group .. thinking it has not been cleaned.
And that is does have wood grain appearance.
I have a feeling it is in the stages of turning brown. And being a woody, has a odd look. I think as it gets more brown, a normal look (for woody) will happen.
That's just my opinion

I'm thinking the coin in hand has a lot more color than the image shows. The bright light on the coin may be hiding the color.
