Annia Galeria Faustina, wife of Emperor Antoninus Pius, is remembered as Faustina the Elder, and is reputed to have created charities benefiting girls from poor families. When she died at the age of just 37, she was deified by her grieving husband (who never remarried). I realize these are somewhat common, but I thought that this specimen, the rather advanced state of the dies notwithstanding, was nicer than most. Colligo ergo sum

The coin is very attractive, but I was particularly struck by how well your comments fit with the theme of the reverse. A nice moment, that. Thank you.

Certainly a keeper and very good example of your short story illustration.

Here's another Diva Faustina in decidedly rougher condition, but still good enough to contrast with the first with respect to the rendition of the portrait; note particularly the somewhat different coiffure.

I found this latest example today banging around loose in a bag that contained mostly large Byzantine bronzes. Small at just 16mm in diameter, but thick with a respectable weight of 2.44 grams. The patina's quite attractive on this one, I think. It seems to me also that in this instance, her features were particularly softened and idealized. Ceres on the reverse, with the legend "CONSECRATIO". I have it as RIC 382a (RSC 166).

Lucky Cuss, feel free to add these to our women of rome thread for Faustina the Elder. It would be a welcome addition to the topic. It can be reached here http://goccf.com/t/283314

Cool coins, I may as well post my one too. I always imagined her as a battleaxe, for no apparent reason, mother in law to Marcus Aurelius. Your story gives the impression of a softer charactee.
