I've been slowly shopping for a Fine 1921-D Mercury dime. I've familiarized myself with the current market rate by looking at PCGS Coin Facts and Numismedia FMV, as well as perusing ebay for what is for sale and what sells.

I've also asked at a few local coin shops. Two guys say they don't have one, and another guy says he'll see what he can find. This guy comes back with the following (both PCGS slabbed):

F12 $228.39
F15 $279.49

Now, I'm wondering, what is a reasonable dealer mark-up?

Numismedia FMV has the F12 at $168 (and that is supposed to account for dealer mark-up); and
PCGS Coin Facts shows:
F12: price guide at $210; with auction sales range from $120 to $154 (avg $134, PCGS and NGC)
F15: price guide at $245; with auction sales range from $141 to $200 (avg $166, PCGS and NGC)

So what is a dealer mark-up supposed to be? Should I expect to pay above even the PCGS price guide value from a coin shop?

The guy is too high, imo. You've done the math, so just wait for the right price. This is not a difficult coin to find in this grade.

His price is definitely too high. I'd keep checking ebay auctions. And from my personal experiences, the fmv guide is fairly accurate when it comes to buying coins from stores and at shows. It all depends on a variety of different factors though.

Yes , now that you know full retail prices just keep looking for a 21-D that has a price your comfortable with.
If you can attend a local coin show, that would be your best bet.

Just make an offer of what you're willing to pay. If he takes it you did well...if not you just move on.

Yeah that's definitely too high, I've been shopping around for one too and that sounds about a hundred dollars too high.

I wouldn't pay over numismedia. Most of the time the coin dealers in my area offer coins right at numismedia or a bit below.

Show the dealer your $168 (or a bit less) in cash money and then walk if they don't want to do that deal.

Are there any coin shows coming up in your area? I bet this is a coin that a few tables would have.

My opinion & experience, LCS's are not for someone on a tight budget. Shop on ebay, and take your time, the right coin will come at the right price.

True keep on looking but remember with a mintage of a bit over one million, and coin collectors are growing, might not find any soon. Yet as noted a coin show is your best place to find one.

I think it is funny the dealer has his quote down to the cent. Like he really thought about it super hard. Just charge a dollar amount with no change, makes it easier.

Thanks everyone for the great responses! I have a lead on one that I'm looking into (not ebay), and there is also a local coin show in my town coming up. I may buy more than one if the opportunity presents itself. Yeah, this dealer seems out to lunch, not sure why he wants to scam me so bad. Agree, on the ridiculousness of quoting a price down to the penny.

paleoguy45 - I changed the preferences on my profile. thanks!
