I've been saving money for a while now and I think the next coin I'll buy I'm going to try to get a WOW/Rare coin. I just don't know what to do. I have some requirements that few coins meet and I'm open to suggestions. It has to be at least XF/Au, I don't want to save up to buy a 1916 SLQ with a barely readable date, 1889 CC in G4 or VG. I've considered doing an 1883-s or 1884-s, I've also been browsing MS65 DMPL Morgans. I would like it to be a larger coin, and don't have much of a preference between silver/gold/copper. I've been looking at an 1898-S MS61 Double Eagle that's very prooflike but it is in an older NGC slab, before they recognized it. I feel like that may also be a rarity of somewhat. How many people have prooflike double eagles? Very few are available from what I've seen, but I do know a decent amount are out there. Possibly an 1885 or 1886 Proof Liberty nickel? I'm unsure if I could acquire a nicely toned Proof Seated half/quarter for this price?

My advice would be to sit tight until YOU know what hits you. Don't take advice from us, we haven't seen your collection and know nothing about you.

It depends on how high of a grade you are looking for. Here's a proof seated half that cost me $1095 in recent years:

And here is a proof Seated quarter that "only" cost me $725:

For older coins such as these, the prices really skyrocket once you get above PF62, but it's still possible to find "lesser" proofs like these with a lot of eye appeal.

Good luck!

Thank you all for the replies and man those are some nice proof Seated coins!

I'm just torn between ideas right now.. I don't like not being able to look at a light at the end of the tunnel so to speak. I feel like I will be able to look forward and avoid other coin purchases that may take away from my budget along the way. I know I really like toned coins and most of my collection is slabbed Morgans. I've always had a key date coin for a set to save for before and now I'm going crazy

Waiting until you decide which coin you want for your
collection is a good suggestion.

I see no problem looking at suggestions.

Those Proof Seated quarters look like WOW!
At least to me.

A WOW coin from my collection

1885 CC GSA

That's a really nice GSA definitely a PL possibly DMPL!

Well, I've been browsing ebay lately and I think I may try to assemble an early 1900s proof set.
Looking at prices on ebay (with a minimum grade of PF62) I could do a set for only about 2500. With that being said, I know it's a lot more than my previous limit, but I think I could move some of my lower grade bulk stuff. I priced using a 64BN IHC, 63CAM V nickel, 63 Barber dime, 62 Barber quarter and half as well.
I really like the look of a Mint state (or Proof) barber, though I don't own any right now. They are very hard to come buy in a decent price above a fine.
What is everyone's opinion of this idea? I know I'd probably have to settle for different years and I realize it would probably be hard to find all the coins in the same year. Would it be worth waiting a while to get a true 'proof set' of coins from the same year?

Look, $1K is a lot of money. Study and save the dough until you've decided which series appeals to you the most, and then decide whether you want to spend the money on condition or rarity. Don't buy impulsively from the advice of others, no matter how well-intended.

Decide for yourself!

If you like a toned Morgan, you may want to consider a PL or DMPL as you will not be disappointed in the beauty of these coins. Here is one from my collection. This coin cost $300. The first set of photos shows the contrast on the coin and the holder photos shows the gold toning.

I do agree that DMPLs are perhaps the prettiest coins out there. I have an 1880-S in PCGS 64DMPL with a green bean and I really like it. Though I enjoy acquiring stuff I don't already have, don't get me wrong if someone brought me a DMPL at a steal I'd have to buy it. That's a nice 87-O, I have a much more common 1887 plain in the same grade.

I like where your going. And if you decide on doing a
classic (1800's) proof year set. Then it might help
you decide on which coin to look for.

I have toyed with doing something similar. Doing a type/year
proof set. In the back of my mind I think about doing a
1896 proof year set. My grandfather was born in 1896.

If you can narrow down what you would really like ..

As you said ... you don't have to buy them all at once.
Be a project that would take many years.

As you can see there are many coins and currency in our hobby of ours . my suggestion is go to a large show. You will be amassed at all the different
numismatic items there. take your time and study each table, make notes of what turns you on and at what tables.
Most of all ,have fun , and don't forget to bargain for the coin you decide on.
Rest in Peace

You can't go wrong with a beautiful piece of gold, although I would recommend NGC or PCGS.

I've got about 19 weeks to save for Summer FUN, so far I'm thinking of either a MS Double eagle, a early 1900s proof set, or a handful of DMPL Morgans.
