What is an 1871 cent with double die worth? It has doubling on the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA?

Without good pictures, it's impossible to say. There were fewer than 4,000,000 1871's minted, so even in G-4 condition the coin is worth $60 or so. Prices increase tenfold or more as you reach uncirculated grades.

It would take a special collector to pay a big premium for the doubling you describe...but, hey, sometimes you get lucky.

I'm looking through Rick Snow's attribution guide for 1871 and I don't see a DDO. I might suspect it's Machine Doubling, but before I rush to conclusions, could you post a closeup pic of the most dramatic doubling on the coin? Seeing how 1871 is a rather scarce date, it would take a major variety to bump the value of an already pricey coin (the shallow N variety is ~ $250 in G-4).

The owner of the coin now is mycrob if he will post pictures--the coin is in XF45. I never noticed the doubled die and he emailed me that it was.
