Hi everybody! New to the forums. Quick question for you regarding collecting Ikes. I'm thinking of starting a a set of business strike Ikes in the Dansco 7176. The way I'd like to go about this is by purchasing sealed cellos on ebay. Does this strategy make sense? What grade can I expect to get, on average, from mint-sealed cellos? Any other ideas or advice would be greatly appreciated!

Hmm.. that could be tough only buying from mint celllos... You'd have to probably buy the entire set for one coin. Probably cheaper to buy them raw.

As posted, you might have to purchase the whole mint set. But sometimes the mint set might be cheaper way to go. You have to figure out what you can buy just the two Ike's versus the Mint set (mint set will have both P and D)
Of course the 71 and 72 Ike's were not in the mint sets and will be the harder coins to find in higher grades.
In the 7176 Dansco there are holes for the Blue Ike's (40%) 1971 - 1974. These will be easier to buy in the blue enveloped OGP.
You will also need the bicentennial 40% Ike, this came in a 3 coin set, red envelope.
Sometimes the mint sets have not been handled very well and the coins get a lot of hits. But sometimes you get some better coins.

Thank you both! Makes a lot of sense. I will focus on raw coins for P and D and blue packs for S. Will let you know how I do!

Certain years it's easier to just buy the mint set. Like the year the Ike's only came in mint sets.

Can't wait for you to show off the ikes you buy. I love ikes, as do many members here.

It is not a bad strategy, just be prepared to deal with the rest of the coins as it will be easier to buy intact mint sets.

Okay just ordered a bunch. Blue packs for S and I was able to find individual cellos for a good number of the other dates I need. Will definitely post pictures when I get them!

I like Ike.
The problem with them is that Gems are rare and gemmy examples are few and far between. As a rule those who cut mint sets are going to pull out the best specimens so you won't get them.
I'd suggest looking through dealers' mint sets and stock. Plan topay a little extra tomake it worth his time.
Now days there's another alternative and that is buying slabbed coins that are "out of the money". People send great coins in to get high grades but some really fine examples will come back with lower grades and these can be picked up for a song. Some of the MS-65's are true Gems but will sell for low prices because there isn't much demand.
Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.

I would check the mint sets, cello's and even raw on ebay. Eisenhower's are reasonable to purchase now and have been so for a while. If you want to take the easy way out you can even find complete collections at reasonable prices. Just take your time and really check out the coin or coins you plan on purchasing.

Okay I've made a few purchases, they're now in the album. I'd like to take some photos for you guys. Before I do, any tips on taking pictures of Dansco albums?

If possible, photograph without the slides in place. Do not worry about being perfect and be patient.
