Does anyone know what the little tag on the bottom of the "S" could be? *** I'm working tonight and will try to use one of the microscopes with the digital cameras to take & post closer/crisper pics. Edited by coffeegod 02/09/2008 9:07 pm

It doesn't look like any of the RPMs on coppercoins' website, so it's probably just a die chip.

I would like to see better pics of this one. Probably not much, but the shape and distance are interesting. Jim

I'm agreeing with Jim. There's something interesting going on there. Doesn't look like a standard die chip.

If you guys want me to e-mail you larger pics of the whole coin and sequence, send me your e-mail. I'll be more than glad to send them to you. Again, I'm still learning about terms and such.... I thought it to be a Cud.

Quote:I thought it to be a Cud. If I'm not mistaken, Cuds are only on the outside edge of the coin. I honestly can't help with this otherwise, but my guess would be a die chip.

Correct. A Cud involves the edge/rim of a coin and a then a spread on the coin.

Is it pretty common near the mint mark? Worth anything? Should I have it graded for any significance? Just another coin to place into the misc. error box?
Thanks

Coffee, was hoping copopercoins would show-up on this one. I would really like his thoughts. I do not think I would spend any money on it but it is worth further investigation. Jim

coffeegod, that is not a Cud, in case you misunderstood. I was replying to j.h.s. I don't think anyone has a sure call on this yet. Hang on to for sure, at least until coppercoins, foundinrolls check out this thread.

I don't believe it is a die chip. It appears as though the "S" is intact and full and this is not "chipped" off the device. Of course it could still be a chip started in the field. The image quality makes it hard to see detail but I am guessing this to be some sort of post mint damage. If it were a RPM, I would expect to see more of the second "S" at the top and it has nothing. Again, for those who don't know....I know nothing!

I cannot tell what it is from that image, but it looks like coin damage without any further information (photos).
