In the long run what your son will remember is the experience and not the coin.

When I was a young collector I remember goin with my dad to downtown Seattle on a Saturday morning. We would go to pawn shops and a few coin shops looking for that one elusive "good buy". I only remember one coin, a 1864 2-cent piece that I paid way too much for. What I cherish from that time is being with my dad.

So my suggestion is let your son buy your time, it is priceless!

Great to get your child started in coin collecting, what a great opportunity to spend time with your child and pass on knowledge. What about starting on a set, like wheat pennies and picking up a key date like 31 s, it gives him a keydate and a chance to undertake a set. Otherwise if you want to go shiny, and can add a few dollars, what about a tenth oz of gold. I think though as others said, the experience with you is what they will remember.
Rest in Peace

You said your son has $100...and his dad wants to spend it....

What does your son want to spend it on?

My son liked coins when he was 6, but now that he's 8, it's all video games and Minecraft

Okay your son has a gift card not you, am I right.
My worst collecting memory is how my parents would decide what I wanted or needed for my collection.

Let him decide what he wants. if it is coins great if it is something else that is great too.

It will be better for both of you

When I was his age, I would have bought myself a Lego set instead of some coins.

I like the pirate chest idea! I have a couple myself actually and I'm in my thirties! A nice old wooden cigar box works wonderfully. I'd recommend something along the lines of T-BOP's suggestions, start with some Wheat cents, early Jeffersons, Morgans, Peace dollars, War Nickels, Liberty nickels, Buffalo nickels, Indian Head cents etc. Don't forget maybe some 64 and earlier Washington quarters, for $100 you should be able to get a little of everything there. I personally love them all. If he's really interested teach him the importance of key dates, and what makes them special. But really, a trip to the LCS would be good too, let him pick something out for himself too.

Thanks for all the (coin collecting) ideas. I have taken him to the LCS, and that's not a bad idea again. I could let him pick out something from there. I'll let you know what he gets.

By the way, already have a train and plenty of Legos, as well as mountains of other types of plastic in various forms. That was the point of this post: no more toys for right now and the $100 is probably better put toward coins than just sitting in a no or very low interest bearing savings account.

I say forget about buying any coins and use the money to take him out on a father and son day!!
Find a few activities you both will enjoy and just have fun :)
At the end of the day that will mean more than any coin !!

Kids make it fun. I let my kids (3 and 5) dig into the international box of $.20 coins... They love it. And occasionally I get them some better American coins for them to collect. I am holding onto them until they are about 10-12 and they can appreciate and care for them a little better then they can now. I am very curious to see what there reaction will be to all these coins and bank notes they collected in their toddler years! I hope they will continue to collect with me as they get older and it grows on them, but that is completely up to them. Anyways whatever you decide to do with this $100, I hope it means something and he will appreciate it sometime in the future. Cheers!
