Great to get your child started in coin collecting, what a great opportunity to spend time with your child and pass on knowledge. What about starting on a set, like wheat pennies and picking up a key date like 31 s, it gives him a keydate and a chance to undertake a set. Otherwise if you want to go shiny, and can add a few dollars, what about a tenth oz of gold. I think though as others said, the experience with you is what they will remember.

My son liked coins when he was 6, but now that he's 8, it's all video games and Minecraft

My worst collecting memory is how my parents would decide what I wanted or needed for my collection.

Let him decide what he wants. if it is coins great if it is something else that is great too.

I think it's a great idea johnny and you said he has plenty of toys already! He'll be teaching old timers a thing or 2 before you know it! And bobby that's way cool

Thanks for all the (coin collecting) ideas. I have taken him to the LCS, and that's not a bad idea again. I could let him pick out something from there. I'll let you know what he gets.

By the way, already have a train and plenty of Legos, as well as mountains of other types of plastic in various forms. That was the point of this post: no more toys for right now and the $100 is probably better put toward coins than just sitting in a no or very low interest bearing savings account.

Kids make it fun. I let my kids (3 and 5) dig into the international box of $.20 coins... They love it. And occasionally I get them some better American coins for them to collect. I am holding onto them until they are about 10-12 and they can appreciate and care for them a little better then they can now. I am very curious to see what there reaction will be to all these coins and bank notes they collected in their toddler years! I hope they will continue to collect with me as they get older and it grows on them, but that is completely up to them. Anyways whatever you decide to do with this $100, I hope it means something and he will appreciate it sometime in the future. Cheers!
