This thread was originally posted at PCGS. All of the coins below are die-transfer counterfeits that have been certified by NGC, PCGS, ANACS and ICG. It appears that the ebay seller kiki2010hy has been able the get counterfeit coins certified by the major Third Party Graders. If you have purchased any slab coins from the seller, you should have a strong concern that the coin is counterfeit. If you check the cert number on the NGC coins, it is noted to contact NGC customer service. NGC has acknowledged that they made a mistake and are taking action to correct the problem. The 1874-s Trade dollar is still active on ebay. The other coins have already been sold. 1. 1874-s Trade $1 NGC:Real NGC holder, counterfeit coin 2219551176942. 1860-o Seated $1 NGC: Real holder, counterfeit coin 3219388333893. 1803 Half Cent NGC: Real holder, counterfeit coin 2219588788554. 1845 Seated $1 PCGS: Real holder, counterfeit coin 3219388284215. 1796 cent ANACS: Real holder, counterfeit coin 3219388277076. 1854-o quarter PCGS: Real holder, counterfeit coin 2219588748087. 1798 cent ICG: Real holder, counterfeit coin 221915752534Edited by Slider23 12/15/2015 2:23 pm

A couple of those look chintzy to begin with, but there are also a couple that don't have a single thing showing that might alert a potential buyer - even a well educated buyer.
This is another good reason for this forum. It helps us see that there are some evil apples in the bunch and at least gives us pause to examine our own abilities to detect such counterfeit issues.
Thank you for advising us here.

If counterfeit coins are getting passed these top TPG's then we're all in trouble. this is another reason I stick with raw coins.

This is my understanding of what is actually happening. This counterfeiter's game plan is to use the die transfer method where a genuine "host" coin is used to create a false die, which is then used to strike coins that are essentially identical to the host coin, with a slight loss of detail. The counterfeited coin then shows every defect that was on the genuine host coin, then, the counterfeited coins are worked over with artificial wear, toning and scratches to hide the counterfeited coin's imperfections. The end result is a very deceptive detail coin that is getting by the TPG's.

How could you tell some of those are counterfeit?

A contact of mine just told me re: the 1861-O Dollar, "Just talked with Charles.......story should be in the next CoinWeek."
....referring to Charles Morgan editor at CoinWeek.com.

The Trade dollar is impressive for being a fake, must of used the same silver content? I guess with so many submissions daily that the TPG are over looking the not so high priced coins.

Last I saw from the threads running on their sites PCGS said they were looking into it but hadn't commented further. NGC said they don't believe every coin to have been fake in the submission and not every fake in the submission got through and posted an article about the large cent counterfeits.
Wouldn't be surprised if this starts to become a big issue if PCGS lowers their threshold for what has to be done with the secure plus service so they have images on hand whenever questions arise. They're at a disadvantage for investigating not having their own images on hand to examine. With that said between PCGS and NGC that's a lot of combined money and resources to come after someone with the pattern that is emerging.

So why has this particular eBayer not gotten the boot yet and is still allowed to continue selling numismatic items after it was determined that a number of their items were fake? They must have had a very convincing reason to be allowed to stay on the platform or it doesn't look good for ebay.

Being an expert when it comes to counterfeit coins, these all look perfectly fine to me.

The 1798 1C NGC XF 45 BN sold by "e-go-tech" is what got this die transfer counterfeit thing started and there appears to be some type of connection to "kiki2010hy". If you check the 1798 1C on the NGC web site, the coin is noted as not genuine. The photos from "e-go-tech" and "kiki2010hy" are very similar in style and color.
