Does anyone know whether it is possible to determine whether this contemporary counterfeit was made in the United States, or in Britain? Or is it too worn and corroded to tell?

All I've been able to find out online is that because Great Britain did not strike copper coins during the time period this coin is from, counterfeit coins were produced in both the United States and Britain in order to fill the void (similar to what happened during the Civil War).

Not sure why you are calling this 1778?

What I believe you have here is a 1775 contemporary counterfeit KG III halfpenny. Most likely British made.

It is certainly not Machin's Mills (American made).
