Got this for $10 Someone went through a lot of trouble to create this one. Thought it was a really cool piece. Edge turned 360° swcoin.ecrater.com

Nice historical piece!
I wonder what's up with the missing (worn?) plating inside the wreath. Was it rubbed off to be sure that the coin isn't gold?

probably someone made a lot of them with the machine to put the reeded edge on the 1883 nickels & gold plate them
the 4.95 difference was a lot of money back then
the nickel size was about the same as a 5 dollar piece but was 3.3 grams short, so if someone didn't notice the weight difference or didn't have a scale ..could get away with it until the story broke

That is a superb example. Would it slab, and if so, what would it slab as?

Nice. Wasn't the guy who did those originally in the 1880's deaf? And is that plumbers puddy V?

Me too. Never seen one that someone took the time to reed the edge. Certainly a nice addition to the 'odd and curious' cabinet.

Thanks! I saw it on ebay and the seller only had pics of the obverse and reverse and no mention of the reeding but I spotted it in the pics. I believe this was hand applied.

Just super! One has to wonder how the reverse came to be defaced that way.

VT actually did then misREED the description, huh? It happens to the best of us ...
Great buy at that price. I've only seen a few of these and paid twice that amount for mine, many years ago.
