About the Vauban coin: This design is probably not the best from the French Mint, I'll give you that.
But Vauban is well known as a soldier & military engineer. His influence on warfare was enormous. His work to improve existing fortresses and designs for building new ones acted to stabilize & strengthen the new borders. His strategic thinking has even been credited with influencing the formulation of post-WWII French foreign & defense policy under President Charles De Gaulle. Napoleon I honored Vauban by arranging to place his heart under the dome of the Invalides church in Paris, right next to him!

ageka... I have be looking at these coins and they are absolutely beautiful ! ! The links you provide are in a language I don't read. What are the prices of these coins in USD. Are they gold? Is there an option to switch the language to English before you post the link? BTW I especially like the coin of your avatar. Thanks, mila_

Hi Mila All the coins I post here are from the French official mint called Monnaie de Paris Unless otherwise stated they are one ounce , half ounce and quarter ounce gold . Most are 920/1000 pure and come in capsule inside hardbox inside colored half hard board sleeve 50 euro is the one ounce 20 euro is the half ounce 10 euro is the quarter ounce 1 1/2 euro is silver non standard about 20 grams They will keep minting them untill the limit is reached If the limit is 5000 it can take several years . For some or other reason they mostly sell on ebay germany We have an ebay per country , Belgium, France, Italy, Spain, Austria, Germany etc Unless the vendor has translated the text ebay will only translate the template which does not help much . The issueing mint only keeps the current coins in its database ; those that are still available from the mint Non europeans get a tax discount ; but typically the coins go cheaper on ebay germany then straight from the mint ( at least for europeans without taxdiscount ) http://www.monnaiedeparis.com/fonds_doc/index.htmThe shop http://boutique.monnaiedeparis.fr/i...Boutique=B2CSome current coins http://www.monnaiedeparis.com/colle...neurs/mc.htmIf you have questions about a particular coin let me know Not all german ebayers will ship outside europe ( insurance problem) Not all german ebayers will take paypal or ask 5% more which they are allowed over here

Ageka, does Monnaie de Paris strike a coin on order, wait until enough orders have accumulated until it's worth their time to strike a number at a time, or does it keep enough inventory on hand to fill anticipated orders, then strike up a bunch more until the limit is eventually reached?

Good question Fred They only say available and since I never bought from them I do no know the delivery delays . Nor can I find their policy .
1) I know that several coins never reached the 5000 limit and after a mandated amount of years they will close the series at the produced number like 5000 authorised 2333 actually made ( and sold ?)
2) If you are an operating mint a die change probably takes only 3-4 hours and I suppose the dies will be in the strongroom and all presses will be able to take the dies and at these mintages all is manually fed into the machine and taking out of the machine .
So economically you have to decide the risk of making 5000 coins and remelting the rest that was unsold or make them in batches I guess they presell and make that amount and then afterwards when the last one of inventory is sold and the limit is not reached they make them in batches of 50 or 100 or 200 or whatever their computer indicates as the lowest cost between hours of diechange and risk of remelting etc

Maybe he's a hardcore Chopin fan and really doesn't want to sell the coin. His wife is pestering him to get rid of it because she wants to spend the money? He's not a high volume eBayer, has only one transaction with feedback in the past year, so maybe he's not current on the Monnaie de Paris gold coin market.
