Seems kind of ironic for a German to be selling a D-Day coin, at least from my perspective, but I guess gold is gold and money is money. I also don't think the design is particularly attractive nor representative of the Normandie invasion, but again, this is from my viewpoint on this side of the Atlantic and D-Day represents many different things to many different peoples from both sides of the Atlantic. As I've mentioned in other threads, when I finally get to visit Europe, one of my very first stops will be Normandie (or Normandy if one prefers); as a latter-day vintage veteran of another war with far less consequences when we lost, I am constantly in awe of those who have gone before me.

I visited all of the landing beaches in France several times My favourite is in Bretagne at Arromanche were they established an harbour with sunken concrete blocks I seem to remember the biggest American cemetery is in the neighbourhood of Arromanche too The guys going to Normandie had a lot more sandy beaches My father was 4 years in a prisonner of war camp in germany To me I do not understand that those that lost the war act as if nothing ever happened and we that underwent it or got liberated seem to remember it all the time . On coins it is a fact that virtually all French Monnaie de Paris coins got sold on ebay Germany Virtually none on ebay France

I suppose it is the prerogative of defeated nations to forget and even deny their history; Japan is very similar. While citizens of both nations acknowledge to some degree their negative history during WW2, they are unwilling to accept their deeper responsibility viz a vis the notion that their culture (e.g., ancient myths of aryan and samurai superiority) might have created such war conditions. While books have been written on this subject, they are unlikely to be either read nor their ideas assimilated into the cultures' collective knowledge nor measures taken to modify their societies such that it would never happen again. It may be hypothesized that the collection of foreign coins might be a superficial attempt to demonstrate societal change to outsiders while core social structures remain intact.
History is doomed to repeat itself.

There may be a simpler explanation for the Germans buying about all the French modern coins from Monnaie de Paris They seem to love those capsules in velvet boxes with carboard hulls around the boxes Not to mention the numbered certificates I think the Canadian mint picked up on this and even made a transport box around all the previous giving four layers before you are at the coin

Yes they have started on tales for children and fairy tales Peter Pan half ounce max amount authorised 1000 but not reached since 2004 because virtually nobody wants to pay 100% over melt This one may go high if the vendor can find two bidders In the meantime he is asking 21 euro shipping to reduce his losses http://cgi.ebay.de/20-EUR-1-2-Uz-Go...04_W0QQitemZ190026016035QQihZ009QQcategoryZ35429QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
