Just a bit more info:

Some ebay listings claim that quote above about the Home Shopping Network came from Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC). However, it seems that it came from the following journal post.

http://www.collectors-society.com/J...ntryID=17141

That post was made by a user called Augustus, who coincidentally is the name used by the owner of the "$5k" collection noted by JGG.

CC Ottawa, yes that is where I got that info. I sourced it from the NGC user and site.

If one could confirm these mintages figures that would be cool, for what ever reasons the RCM guards these # like national secrets. One would think the Home Shopping would have tried one or two coins and stop why would you attempt to destroy the other 300 or so units makes no common sense.

If the mintage figures are true, it's not hard to believe that true collectors like 300 individuals have bought and just held on, most of us hardly ever sell units.

Why doesn't someone ask Steven Bromberg and ask him point blank.
If this happened for his show he would be more then willing to discuss this.
He can reached almost anytime at his store. Lets put some fact or fiction to this story.

One thing that's a little confusing, under the lowly quantity sold in Charlton it indicates "NOTE: Quantity Sold numbers are those for 2009. The Royal Canadian Mint Annual Report for 2010 did not report additional units sold."

So my question, in that these coins were for the 2008-2009 NHL season, were they not released and sold in 2008?

And whether or not Bromberg melted some, has anyone ever contacted RCM to enquire about the accuracy of their reporting? Considering the announced mintage was 10000, the quantity sold is just way too low to be credible, especially considering the hockey theme.

Would Bromberg have melted it down or some ill-advised entrepreneur have done it? Either way, he probably could add some clarity to this.

To add to confusion, the Home Shopping Network is the US version, I doubt they would have hoarded enough of these coins and tried the melt into plastic set idea, but anything is sort of possible. More likely they were like many NCLT not very popular, minted to demand most I guess sat at Canada Post outlet and got wholesaled out, that's how the Shopping Channel has those 30 cents on a dollar blockbusters. I have contacted the RCM on mintage figures of the 2007 wedding sets, their answer was what is recorded on their annual reports are correct, so these incredible mintages are correct, someone with better connections at the RCM should try to get a better answer in writing. The other way to look at some of these if true mintages like 300 units, you can for about 10000.00 corner the market by one collector which may have happened.

For all the hockey fans out there, it's not only the 2008-2009 Goalie Masks that are indicated to be rare. For example also that year, season 2008-2009, there was a 50c embedded in a puck. I notice one team, mintage 248 and the same item on ebay for $24.99. Same year, road and home jerseys on nickel dollars, embedded in a puck as well. The amount sold for the Montreal Canadians is the lowest at 62. If this is correct, this must be the rarest nickel dollar of all time!***

Theory 2 - these "gift sets" were all a commissioned release by the NHL and sold through licensed NHL hockey stores, the reason why RCM hasn't accurately reported "quantity sold" results.

****some are dated 2008 and others 2009. Edmonton Oilers "mini puck" nickel dollar takes the prize for even lower at 49.

The only logical reasons for these tiny mintages are that in that era, mint to demand there was no demand and the press run of say 1000 or whatever never was shipped out of Winnipeg and was except for say the 49 Oilers loonie and the rest was recycled or ARP, The last few Edmonton min-pucks goes for around 200.00 so if there was lots out there it would be hitting the marketplace

John have you ever been to a NHL hockey store and noticed all that they sell? Aside from jerseys, there's everything from soup to nuts, well almost. Because all items bearing NHL logos are licensed, I be totally shocked if these coins weren't sold on NHL licensed stores as well. If the various series were commissioned by the NHL, that would explain why next to none were sold directly by RCM, and perhaps only from their Mint stores.
