Thanks for the plain definition and excellent photos. That's one I've always had a hard time remembering.

The same two styles were used on cents as well. Here are some clear images from the CONECA website of the two. Large S Small S

second coins it's a large S if you notice the s is below the bottom line of the window and the first picture is on the same line than the bottom window.

uruman, where are you getting that as a diagnostic? the mint marks were hand punched into the working dies back in 1941. The position of the mint mark was all over the place from die to die. The OP's coins are both the same font, which is the small S variety, not the more desireable large S.

I think uruman and the OP may be using an article that describes a method for attributing a large S. Unfortunately the method described contributes to a lot of confusion since it isn't foolproof. In fact it may only describe a method for attributing a single reverse die. What happened to me and others I've seen here is that it slows down the learning process. Eventually folks realize that the fonts are different and use that as the diagnostic to attribute the coins. Fastest and best way. Trying to ascertain if a worn mint mark is above or below a worn windowsill becomes a moot point.

Yeah, I know I am not a nickel guy, but I do know mint marks through my fascination with RPMs. I just could not understand how you could use location as a means if they variety appears on more than one die.
