I haven't seen one in person... but I don't come across U.S. gold that often... there was word that a local auction had a fake u.s. gold coin once but I couldn't contact the auctioneer to have a look and confirm.
google fake u.s. gold..... you'll see plenty of examples....

Quote:I wonder why the customer would buy the bar on ebay (at retail prices, presumably) and then try to sell it so soon after purchase to a coin shop (for wholesale prices, presumably? Something sounds off about that story. Right now you can buy Swiss bars from APMEX for $7.99 over spot delivered to you off ebay. Pay with a credit card that has a cash rebate and you're actually paying less than spot. So, it can happen. Last year I bought 3 of the same bars from them for $0.00 over spot. I went to a coin show a few weeks later and sold them to Gainesville Coins for spot. They had a handheld device that scanned the bars and showed they were pure gold. It was pretty neat. Only downside was that they paid with a check, so I had to wait to cash it. BTW, my bet is the guy knew it was fake or got scammed by someone other than APMEX (or any of the major dealers). He may have just found out the hard way that you have to be careful who you deal with. Hopefully, he won't try to recoup his losses by scamming someone else. I think the coin shop should refuse to return the bar and tell the guy to call the police and the shop owner can give it to the police who can decide themselves what to do with it. Also BTW, anyone who knowingly attempts to sell such bars is committing a felony. It doesn't matter if they say they're replicas or whatever because they're obviously made to defraud.

OK, better idea: the coin shop should just call the police and tell them that they have a counterfeit gold bar that someone tried to sell to them. The police arrive and take it. I seriously doubt they'd get it back. The bottom line here is that the bar needs to be destroyed. Otherwise, it will continue to be used to defraud people.

Not only can they, I'm pretty sure they are required to confiscate it.

I guess I should have posted a followed a update to this post. The shop work with the customer. ebay did not want to do anything for the guy. But PayPal did. The shop wrote up a letter. Told what tests we did and what NTR Test results were. PayPal refunded the money for the guy who bought it. We are not sure what they did with the ebay seller.

After my research of sales on ebay, of the last 1,000+ Perth Mint gold bars on ebay sold by sellers with less than 150 positive, legitimate seller feedbacks, 75% of Perth Mint gold bars sold on ebay are counterfeits produced in China. That's right, 3 out of every 4 bars sold are fakes, when sold by sellers with less than 150 positive, legitimate seller feedbacks. Why would anyone sell gold at spot price minus 10% to 15% in ebay and PayPal fees? Think about it.Get your gold authenticated! Later in life, when its time to cash out, you get nothing!

I would also like to see the pictures, I already found some of these coins being openly sold in (Not Allowed).com. Apparently they can even pass tests according to the supplier. Anybody of you ever seen such coins in real?
