I have a lot of very large 3" & 4" medals and would love to find a better way to store them. I know a lot of medal collectors use cabinets but I have soooo many and my collection continues to grow. With what I have now I would need a HUGE cabinet to house them all. Right now I have them all stored in ziplock bags in a dry cool place in ziplock containers. I am wondering if I should buy some 3" & 4" Frame-a-coin " unplasticized" flips to store them in? Has anyone here used the Frame-a-coin flips for long term storage? If I get them it would definitely make it much easier to enjoy them each time I want to see them. Any other thoughts or ideas?

Frame-a-coin flips look like a good idea to me, I wonder if there's a UK supplier ?

At the moment, I'm using campaign medal flips which are oblong but some of the medallions I have are 6 inches or more in diameter.

I have not used these, but if they are PVC free (which they likely are nowadays), then they would work. Have you ever considered the pocketed pages that fit into a 3-ring binder? Some of my coins are in 2X2 holders inserted into these pocketed pages.

I have struggled with the same dilemma. To the best of my knowledge the frame a coin flips that I've seen are softened vinyl and thus likely contain PVC.

I have been using two different products with some success.

First are blue leatherette boxes (think flip open jewelry style boxes) with impressionable material inside into which you can press a medal and it will take its shape.
The impression part does work to a certain extent. Just be sure to center and orient the medal the way you like first. I would recommend wearing gloves and pushing on the edges of the medal when making the impression. These work well for medals that don't travel much, but if you carry them around to shows, etc the medals will tend to shift about inside.

They come in 3.5 inch square (model number 7916) or 6.5 inch square (model number 7917) versions and are available from most coin supply places.

The other product I recently tried are Lighthouse Quadrum XL holders which come in sizes from 42mm to 58mm. Simply get the size closest to the diameter of your medal (if your medal is between sizes round down) and carefully place the medal in the soft inert insert and then click the hard plastic covers closed around it. You can even reopen it later if desired. There are also three ring binder style pages made just for these. I recently put a 12 piece set of medals into a single page this way and put it in a nice binder and it's very presentable. The caveat is that these cannot hold medals thicker than about 4.5 mm. Many medals are within this range, but very high relief medals would not fit. These are also available from most coin supply places.

If you move your collection about a lot there are advantages to the Quadrum XL for those medals that will fit. However, if you prefer not to encase them in plastic or you have much larger medals the blue boxes may be more your style.

One last note. While both of the items mentioned above appear to be inert I make it a practice to check on items in storage at least once per year and replace the holder if I see any sign of deterioration of the holder in order to avoid damage to the medal. Until someone makes a pure mylar holder of sufficient size we just have to check on them now and then.

If you try either of these or find another solution please share your experiences. Hope this helps!

I thank everyone for the help & suggestions. PatAR I will try the Lighthouse Quadrum XL holders for my smaller medals, and then house them in the pocketed sheets. I will also give the boxes a try for my larger pieces. Thanks again!
