After trying to get one of these for a long time I finally picked up a 1947 Henning from ebay. The off years (years other than 1944) are the hardest part of building my Henning collection.

Thanks for posting this. I had not heard of Henning until I saw your post and did some searching on the web. Counterfeiters and their deeds have always fascinated me.

So what's the rarest henning? I know 44 seems to be the most common, then 39.

I could not tell Henning from regular nickels.

Thanks everyone. Ocala, Yes that is the one. The seller had other off dates for sale in the past but they did not look like actual Hennings to me. But this one was obvious to me right away as soon as I saw it the day he listed it.
Drew, that's a good question. You're right, the 1944's are the most common. This is because he made the 1944 dies first to strike his nickels. But according to the story from his interview a bank teller emptied one of his rolls he was cashing in to count them. She commented to him that it was interesting that they were all 1944's. That's when he decided he better make some other dates to mix with his 1944's. The only off dates I have so far are two 1939's found in circulation and this 1947. I have read before the 1947 & 1953 are the hardest to find. But I think the 1946 is just as elusive. Looking back over reported finds on forums the 1939 does seem to be the most common off date. But even that one is still hard to find.

The first thing that stands out are the mushy details. The edges of the letters are not crisp and the fields flow up into the letters at some spots. Also the fields are rough and have small pimples. Plus notice how the coin looks worn but the left side of the reverse still has some finning that hasn't worn down yet. Henning made his dies from worn coins so they didn't have full details when they were struck.

Nice coin! This Henning doesn't have the looped R on the reverse. Is the weight diagnostic?
