Got a proof toonie from McDonalds, ooh baby! They are out there! It's from a working class neighbourhood, nothing seedy about it so it was a nice surprise. I'm a big supporter of "pictures or it didn't happen" so here are the pics! Post your wild proof finds here!

Unfortunately I have yet to find any proofs. I think it'd be tough for someone to crack one out of those cases and put it in circulation. But here's a 2003 specimen I once found while CRH. Someone must have cracked a specimen set and let this one go loose. I don't CRH often, but I was bored one day. I live a 7 minute walk away from the bank so I decided I'd try it. Brought about 400 nickels home (10 rolls). Found this one:

Libertad, if you compare your 2003W toonie to those selling on ebay, you'll notice reasons why it's not Proof. Possibly once "proof-like" though, originally from either an Uncirculated or gift set.

Paulsz: I would count that as "wild" since coin rolls find their way into retail stores.
Sure, not really proof anymore, so impaired proof-like. Coin collectors are so picky on terminology, wow. Cents vs pennies all over again etc, silly.

@ Libertad Are you not a coin collector, if not what's your interest in coin? It's by no means "picky" for folks who discover collector coin in circulation to endeavour to understand what it is that they found and I assumed that included you. Proof coin never becomes "impaired proof-like". A Proof 2003 toonie is made from sterling silver with a gold plated core. On the other hand a 2003W toonie from an uncirculated or gift set (commonly referred to Proof-like) is made from the same metal as the toonies minted for circulation.
Likewise, Paulsz posted a nice example of a 2003 5c, with the background being lined, a third type of collector coin that at some point was removed from a 2003 Specimen Set.
Learning and coin collecting go hand in hand, it's a journey that has no end. Keep an open mind and it will lead you down the path of discovery....

I only urged people to post a proof find, so I'm sorry for being so vague and open-ended so as to include more posts like NCLT, specimen, proof, proof-like, et cetera, *sigh*. I see where the confusion lied, I mis-typed and said "from proof to impaired proof-like" when I most certainly should have typed "from proof-like to impaired proof-like". Sometimes we type fast and don't catch it until later. I was thinking in my head, "this coin was made from dies made for proof coins, therefore it's a proof coin", but the RCM has to insert a silly term "proof-like" to confuse all collectors. Let's not convolute the topic, let's just post some pics of awesome finds.

I am guilty of releasing more than a few dozen "Proof Like" or "MS NBU" coins from "Uncirculated" sets. I used to find quite a few too when I handled large quantities of change every day. There should be an older thread with pics. Unless it was a coin not issued for circulation I turn them loose again. The finish really stands out. Best find was a Canada goose SP dollar (2004) sorry, no pic available.

Found this 1999P 25ct in change about 15 years ago. Its a little beet up and maybe it was a test coin. Not sure why someone would break a set and put in circulation.

This is the nicest PL* I've ever found so far going through rolls from the bank. I've also found a 2005 and 2001 proof toonie but their condition is nowhere near this one! Enjoy 1998

That is not a 1998 proof. It is a PL (or NBU) from a set. The 1998 proof is silver with gold plated center. None of the coins pictured in this thread are proofs despite the title.

"pictures or it didn't happen".............this made me laugh. If I were to subscribe to this philosophy, then 98% of my life did not happen.
