I had grown tired of looking at my 1934 - 1945 AU/BU Mercury set so I ventured out to identify what I would replace it with in my collection. Of course Liberty Seated dimes take precedent in my world but I am also a fan of old gold...either way, I need the money. I had posted the entire set in the capital plastics holder on the bay for $695. Really not a bad deal considering it comes to $19.85 a coin. after over a month and no takers, I decided to break up the set and sell individual coins. What a smart move. I have moved only 16 of the 35 coins in the set and have generated $574 from this. I am now eyeballing a $2.5 quarter eagle and PCGS LSD for the collection. In the end, I have averaged $35.87 per coin sold, have managed to keep 19 of the dimes in the set and I am about to add two beautiful coins to my collection. Just thought I would share.

No surprise here. The set is always worth less than the sum of its parts. Good work.

Now you know why dealers buy sets and take them apart. Placing each coin in a separate flip.

There are lots of collectors, who build sets by collecting individual coins. It seems that you are selling to what most set builders do.
As an example, I have never bought a set of coins, but I have been collecting by the acquisition of single coins.
I have broken up sets to sell the whole of my collection, coin by coin. Each collector has his own priorities, and so the whole collection was easier to sell as individual coins. That was decades ago.
There were a few remainders, which I sold as a miscellaneous job lot through public auction. The money from the job lot provided the cash to buy a interesting gold coin, which was the start of my new collection.

Buy big, sell small = Profit. Selling sets on ebay is wicked to the seller. Buying lots, collections and sets can often give you better coins for your own set and sell the rest at a profit.

Quote: It seems that you are selling to what most set builders do. I built that set up over 3 years of work. I made some good buys on most of the coins as individual pieces. Last year I ordered and waited 3 months for that capital plastics holder from random supplier I found online. The whole project was a labor of love. I am finding myself thinking I want to whittle down to Liberty Seated dimes, Capped Bust Dimes, Capped Bust Half Dimes and some nice historic gold pieces. I have so many random type coins and all in lovely shape. Its like, do I want $2,500 in 50 different coins or in 10 coins? Its such a tough decision.

Far more market demand for individual coins than for whole sets. Lots of us like to buld sets, and have fun doing so. Also much more budget friendly. That would help to explain why the average price per coin is higher.
Perhaps, and if you have the money, the 'thing' would be to buy whole sets and break them up and re sell individual coins at a greater average price per coin. That could be fun. Dealers do that for profit. Pick the best value for money 'cherries' out for yourself, to build a superior set. There would be a profit motive as well!

Lots of collectors can't afford $695 at once, but many, many collectors can afford $20 every week...
