So I have been thinking about starting a thread for the CSA note collectors. Everyone needs to post their CSA notes here for everyone to view and comment on. I don't believe one of these has been started.
Here are a few from my collection and I look forward to seeing everyone else's as well.
I have one on the way that I thought was awesome. I actually cant wait to post it and get everybodys opinion. I bought it because it has a stain, and the stain looks like blood. I mean it's not everyday you just let yourself bleed on your paper money. Seems like it has a chance of MAYBE being in a battle in the civil war? I thought to MAYYbe have the stain tested and see if it can be confirmed blood, but I don't know if I wanna risk ruining the note further. And even if it was confirmed human blood that still wouldn't prove it was in a soldiers pocket during the civil war. Still makes a cool conversation piece. I wouldnever buy a note with a stain as big as this one but given the circumstances I thought it was a cool piece.
Ok guys here is the BLOODY CSA NOTE. Anyways if you see it in person the stain is a dark reddish/purple/brown color.. I would normally try to stay away from purchasing a note with a large stain but given the possibility here I thought It was a cool piece. I have no clue if it really is blood, I thought of having it tested but I don't really want to ruin the note further and even if it was confirmed human blood that still wouldn't place it in a soldiers pocket during a battle. But it is a Plausible theory.. It could be anything.
CollectorKing...Pretty cool piece there. It really makes you wonder.
marccollection...nice group of notes there. I actually like the cancelled notes and have a few in my collection as well. I have found that the cancelled notes are sometimes cheaper and personally I like the history behind them knowing that they were actually used and redeemed.
Many CSA notes have been cut-cancelled or cut-out-cancelled to indicate that they were paid and collected by the government. This is different than damage or repairs and these notes deserve their own pricing. These notes, especially clean cut-cancels, are attractive and desirable in their own right. Some varieties are extremely difficult if not impossible to get not cancelled. In general, cut-cancelled notes command a price of 2/3 that of an equivalent uncut note. While cut-out-cancels vary, on balance they are worth about 1/3 that of an equivalent uncut note. Some varieties with cut cancellation will be worth a bit more than these ratios. Some more common types perhaps a bit less.
There are those who say that clean cut-cancellations with no paper loss have little effect on value. My experience leads me to believe this is not true. I've not seen a cut-cancelled CSA note bring a similar price as an uncut example of the same note in the same grade in the past couple of years. I've also never been able to sell cut-cancelled notes for the same price as un-cut examples to the people who postulate that there is little difference in value. It may have been true in 1996 at Criswell's 1996 prices, but it is not true today. Therefore, I use reasonable estimates in CSA Quotes based on real sales for cut and cut-out cancelled notes. I will change this when I find someone(s) who will by my cut-cancelled type notes at un-cut prices. NOTE: Some rare varieties are only available cut (or a cut cancelled example may be the only available for decades) and this guideline may not apply to R9 and better notes the same way it does for type examples.
Tomorrow I will post other pictures, unluckily a member of my family have take the great part of the CSA collection with approximately 30 items maybe more.
