I was going through some currency and one had this unfamiliar mark. Any idea what it might be?

Don't know other than it appears to be post-BEP ink.

Somebody stamped the bill, probably a bank or currency exchange.

cashbound - Thanks for that link, very informative. Don't deal in contemporary notes and had not heard that term applied to PM.

Unlike earlier silver coins, paper money rarely manages to acquire more than one or two such "chop marks". That's because marking bills in this fashion is usually frowned upon by the issuing country: in America, such marks are considered sufficient to render the note unfit for reissue, so once the note makes its way back into the US banking system, it would most likely be withdrawn and destroyed.

It is technically illegal in America for an organization to place such stamps on American notes. These marks are applied by overseas money exchangers (mostly in Asia), so American law does not apply to them.

For some reason I feel that this mark was stamped in the United States. Strange!
