I've had this medal for a while and have tried to identify the medalist with no luck. I think it is signed "E. Boggiato" or E. Buggiato" but it is possible I have a letter missing or incorrect since the signature is pretty faint.

I'd also be interested to know what it was for - it looks to be missing an inscription. It is sized about 43mm & a hefty 97.5g.

Thank you! :)

I don't have much help, but a couple thoughts that come to mind is that the rooster is sometimes used as a symbol by France. That might explain the "RF" on the reverse: Republique Francaise.

Fasces (the thing the rooster is standing on) are also common symbols of France after the French Revolution [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fasce...es_in_France]. That plus the RF makes it almost certain your item is of French origin. It looks like a French medal to me, where some text about the recipient would be added to the mostly blank RF side.

Oops. You said it was a French medal in the title. Duh!
