I am looking to buy my first gold Indians, I am thinking I can get the most for my money if I don't go with slabbed, but of course fakes worry me. What are the earmarks of counterfit gold indians? What should are fakes?I look for to keep from getting shafted, and how common

There's an article on PCGS with this quote "The single most counterfeited series of U.S. gold coins is the Indian Head Quarter Eagle. This series accounts for approximately 40% of all counterfeit gold coins received by PCGS. The only other series of counterfeits that could compare in quantity to the $2½ "Indians" would be $1 gold coins (if all three types are added together), followed closely by $3 gold pieces and $5 "Indians." Combined together, these four series account for 90% of all the counterfeit gold coins received for authentication."

It also gives some pointers on spotting genuine and counterfeit examples.

I appreciate the reply nss. I'll check the article out. I wonder if anyone has a fake, they could post, although I doubt it would be something someone would want to advertise they had in possession.

I have seen fake gold coins and agree they usually are lower denomination pieces like $5, $2 1/2, and $1. I have yet to see a fake $10 or $20 piece since most are just bullion coins...The real rarer dates seem to be the lower denomination coins...Unless we are talking about a 1933 Double Eagle.

Bite the bullet and purchase a coin already slabbed by one of the 4 TPGS. Coin will be easer to sell when the time comes. Every denomination of gold is extensively counterfeited. Reason lower denominations are mostly seen is less gold is required to make a fake with a high numismatic premium so more profit for the counterfeiter.

Well now to tell you a secret no longer makes it secret. :)
I use David Lawrence to view and get some data for coins. You could try there.

@Brushy Bandit if you have to post on a public forum to ask these kinds of basic questions you don't have any business buying uncertified raw gold, not trying to sound harsh here but the most deceptive fakes can sometimes fool even the experts. The worst fakes are the ones that look real. It's not just about saving money, it's about protecting your funds spent. Please buy certified and you will have a better experience in the long run. Good luck.

Best Regards,

George

I would also advise TPG, but only PCGS or NGC.

Yes, I couldn't agree more. I guess I didn't say that because there are no other third party grading services whose slabs I regularly trade. Nothing wrong with ANACS but a lot of their coins have been crossed into other holders. One thing I have learned in decades of dealing coins is, there is a reason why those coins are in those holders. Or raw.

Best Regards,

George
