I received a 1911 Lincoln Cent back from NGC that got the dreaded "altered color" label. I'd posted the coin on CCF and from the responses thought it was safe to send it. Oh well. Altered color is hard to identify for me!!

Anyway, several folks have said to put the coin on a window sill and let it retone.

My questions is should I crack it out of the slab or leave it in the slab to retone it? Does it matter?

While the slab is not air tight and therefore not completely immune to the environment, the process will be much faster if you crack out the cent.

Not only will it take longer to tone more, but the results will still not change the altered status.

Copper, once cleaned or AT, is never the same again.

Paul , be prepared for the toning process to take a long time on window sill. I would protect coin from dirt and dust by putting coin in a flip. IMHO .

Thanks for the advice. I've had an 1856 Large Cent on the window sill for the last six months and it's barely darkened at all. But then, I live in Wisconsin and there hasn't been a whole lot of sun these past months.

I'll crack out the 1911 and see what happens.

Fortunately, I'm a patient guy. I can't say the same for my wife who has coins in the windows of her house.

You'll have to crack it out, slabs are pretty darn good protection. Set it out bare-naked on a piece of cardboard. Sun is NOT important, in fact, I use a pretty dark windowsill in my basement for this. It may take a year or two, but it will retone and look better....and it would probably slab if tones back nicely.

PS - Rinse it off with acetone and then xylene so the surfaces are fresh.
