Real in that it is a genuine quarter, but not a gold quarter, just after market plated with a miniscule amount of 24 kt gold. Value - $ 0.25.

Isn't this one of those gold plated deals you see on TV from time to time? Not issued by the US mint, but some company claiming to be a mint?

Someone spent Grandma's valuable rare limited edition 24K gold plated expensive quarter- for its true value - 25¢.

Quote: Isn't this one of those gold plated deals you see on TV from time to time? Yes. But the quarter was issued by the mint. Someone then plated it with a tiny bit of gold. It's still just a quarter. It would cost more to remove the gold than the gold is worth.

but is it a good piece for our collection or is it worth just a quarter?

Most collectors consider it a damaged or altered coin and of no numismatic value. Still spendable for a quarter though.

No harm in keeping it if you like -- but it will always be a damaged quarter. I have one in my oddities collection.

I have an entire set of gold plated quarters in an dansco album I bought for a couple dollars over face value. The album itself is worth more than the difference I paid for them. Keep it as a fun coin and it will always be worth 25 cents.
