While I was waiting in line at the bank today, a lot of other people were also in line (reasonable since that was the only bank open on Sunday) and all of them were cashing checks. One guy behind me apparently is a regular at this branch, since the manager addressed him by his first name and asked him if he was cashing another check, which he said he was. He was asked how he wanted the money, and he mentioned 2 100s and the rest in 20s. But then here's the strange part- the manager then mentioned "and there will be $10 taken out as always" which implies that A, he's not a customer with that bank, and B, he's been cashing checks with them for awhile. Makes you wonder what's going on with other people if they're willing to shell out their money just to get their check money, when they could just open an account instead. Either that, or their regular bank isn't open and they needed money now. What do you guys think about this situation?

Instead of going to a check cashing place, he goes to a bank. Maybe that bank branch is local to him. Most banks charge a service fee for an account if you don't have direct deposit.

There are many unbanked in this world. They pay for normal banking services like check cashing that most of the rest of us with free accounts take for granted. Remember that these are not public instititions supported by tax money, but are private companies and they need to make money on their services.
