100 Mon from Japan, ca. Mid 1800s. I don't know how to spot fakes, but these are fairly popular, usually fetching $15-25 on the Bay.

Thanks, everyone for your responses. Quote: Looks like a modern fake to me. I am curious about what you see that makes you think the coin is not authentic? Since I am posting this for someone else, I have no idea about its provenance, but I can try to find out. That may or may not shed some light on the question.

Another question: the NGC reference says: Quote: Smooth rim with validation mark at left and right What is a "validation mark"? I do not see anything that could be one on their photo nor on this one in the OP.

I just heard from the coin's owner. It weighs 22.04 g.

22.04g is within tolerance, but that does not mean much with these coins.
I said it was fake because the characters lack the crispness that I normally see on Japanese coins of this era, especially on the reverse. The loghting and the harsh cleaning this coin has had might be influencing this. I know there are a lot of fakes out there, but there are also a lot of autherntic ones too. I just got a bad gut feeling about this coin, and I have learned to trust that gut feeling for cast Asian coins.
