Ok I have the VF 1944-s that I have a thread for and from what ive read 41-45 were silver due to the war. But the should have a mint mark on the back... Here is a 1943-P thats not it great condition but you can make out everything on it (tho my camera sucks) my question is if it doesn't have a mint mark is it still silver? i got 2 1942's with no mint mark on front or back. as you can kinda tell them last 2 have no mint mark on backs, ill try to take better pics when my buddy comes over with his Iphone. But are there any that doesn't have mint mark for 1942? and if so are they still silver?

The silver nickels were introduced on 1942. The nickels that were made earlier in the year have no silver in them, thus there will be no mint mark for any produced at Philadelphia. To distinguish the silver composition nickels a large mint Mark was placed above the dome of Monticello and the P mint Mark was used for the first time.

The nickels were made of silver, because nickel was being used to to make armor for the war effort. All the silver War Nickels were minted with large mint marks on the reverse over the dome. The plan was to make them all easily identifiable so that they could be removed from circulation and melted down later to recover the silver.

I have a few 43,44,45 war times but sometimes I see 40's and 50's Jefferson nickels that looks like they were made with silver ....(?)

Paola, I agree the wartime nickels usually have a particular look because of the silver content. Are the non-wartime nickels upper grade?

Might help to post pictures of visually similar silver and non-silver nickels side-by-side. IMO the silver ones have a larger variation in "look" across the grades.

1942 was the only year they were made with and without 35% silver. The mintmark always tells the tale. 1943, 1944 & 1945 nickels are all 35% silver.
