It appears you have a Shield nickel, minted between 1866 and 1883 that someone created a hand made bezel for. In the condition shown it would have no numismatic (coin) value. It might have had some relic value if it were created during the civil war, but it is doubtful that this piece would fall into that age range since the earliest it could be is 1866.

Contemporary counterfeit? Looks to be made of lead.

I can only guess.... To me it looks like someone had made a crude mold of a Shield nickel (1866 - 1883). The hot lead would have been poured into the mold. The attached section is where the lead was poured in. It all cooled to this shape. If the design had turned out better, then the counterfeiter would have cleaned it up, removed the flashing/nipple and tried to pass it off ...spend it. Of course .... just my guess

I agree that there is no numismatic value with this piece. However, it is still a kinda neat piece of history. I wouldn't throw it away.

Welcome to the CCF, Avisuals. Hope you enjoy the site and the comradery! Since your find appears to have had some ornamental purpose, it may have been made by a jeweler or apprentice jeweler; perhaps, a practice piece? I note that whoever made this curiosity took care to align the coin, be it genuine or a cast copy, with the extension. So, it was either intended for suspension or to be mounted atop something ... IMHO, the value of this item is so minimal that it would not be worth the time and effort needed to take the ebay route.

Hi Thanks to all who took the time to respond I appreciate the information. Never thought it had any coin value.....
as far as eBaying it as a coin.... I think I wouldn't do that... based on the great information from all that responded, still a neat old relic......
thanks

Looks to be cast from a fairly soft metal. If lead, weight should confirm.
