There have been some I have seen in high grade ICCS flips the last couple of weeks. Probably coming from sets and/or rolls. Probably start showing up in circulation around the end of March.

several rolls of 2016 quarters for sale on ebay but sellers don't have them in hand yet. Pre-orders... How much is the fee over FV when you buy straight from the Mint? Can it be done both in Winnipeg and Ottawa or only in Winnipeg? I can't find any information about buying rolls of circulation coins on their website :-(

I picked up some rolls of 2016 quarters this week and one roll of 2016 dimes from a TD branch. Also found two rolls of the new women's loonie. No nickels or toonies yet.

A question. Do stores etc. have to receive a certain amount of new coinage per yearly release?, or is get what they get. I've only found one 2016 coin(dime) in circulation thus far.

Canacoins, for simplicity sake, one could think of stores or bank branches somewhat like a distributor of coin to the general public, and Loomis/Brinks etc/Bank currency centres as their supplier, with the Bank of Canada through RCM as the manufacturer. When the distributors run short of coin they order more, and if their supplier requires more to fill the coin orders because they're not taking in enough excess, only then is new coin bought from BofC. There's no process whereby certain amounts of new coin is automatically distributed or allotted. Some years the Bank of Canada/RCM mints more, less or even none, depending on forecasts for demand and current volumes stockpiled by suppliers. Maybe of interest to consider, other than through the Alloy Recovery Program or by coin removed from circulation by collectors, eventually it would reach a point of no requirement whatsoever for any new coin - added reason because of popularity of cashless options, demand is reduced.

Thank you wildflowerAB. So ina nutshell,it's a roll of the dice when, what and how many Business Strikes one might find. Also... Quote: Alloy Recovery Program This is the reason (one of) why pre-2000 coinage is getting "very" hard to come across. Yes?

Yes, then the metal in older coins is recycled by the mint, the steel plated coins are cheap to produce, one new loonie or toonie only costs a few cents to make. Out with the old, in with the new... As I recall, the most recent round of ARP has been ongoing since about 2004 so it's a slow gradual process and quite possible it's taken this long for roll hunters to notice the effect. There's another reason too, unlike mutilated banknotes, coin is not ordinarily redeemed or exchanged from the Bank of Canada. So if it wasn't ever officially recalled through programs like the ARP, after many years or decades of circulation it eventually would become heavily worn. I'd expect that would reflect very poorly on Canada and RCM, more what one might expect to see in a third world country.

Our coinage especially the 70's, get so beat up by nicks, scratches basic PMD that the features are hard to see,yet there is very little actual wear. Ugly,to say the least Post your "Ugly Canadian Coins" ?

I can't find any information about buying rolls of circulation coins on their website :-( To pick up right from the mint it's 5% above face value.... (the exception is the rolls of 50cent pieces) Or you can get them at face from the bank or a store etc. Last time I went to the mint they didn't have any, I'm sure by now they will have their rolls for sale in their boutique.

I don't normally start seeing the year's circulation coins show up until at least June... then by August, I seem to see them regularly; I believe that even though you can buy rolls directly from the mint early in the calendar year, there is a delay of them getting to banks, and into circulation - the delay is probably stemmed from the mint using up the remaining prior calendar year's stock...

I am planning on going over the border to the coin show in Windsor this Sunday (5/1/16) and thought I could get my 2016 Canadian coins from some of the dealer's pocket change; but from what I hear here it's still a little bit too early. I know of a couple banks there that are open on Sundays, so I might pop into one of them and see if I can finagle some from them. Of course, I already have the 2016 set from the RCM, but it's not the same as getting coins in circulation. Pocket-change finds are WAY more enjoyable!
