Hi there, My grandmother gave this to me 20 years ago. I didn't think much of it and stuck it in a box and completely forgot about it. Came across it yesterday and thought "hmmm, what do I have here?" Did a little research online and couldn't believe it. Was I really holding an 1874 Liberty Head, ten dollar gold coin? A 142 year old gold coin! Could you experts out there please verify it's authenticity and possibly grade it? It's obviously far from mint condition but for 142 years old, it's not bad... at least to my eyes. I do have a VERY small coin collection and this would make a great addition to that. Thanks for any help.

Taking the lighting in consideration I think the coin is in extra fine (XF) condition.

Nothing jumps out at me indicating that it might be fake, so I'm inclined to think it's authentic. I'm thinking maybe AU-50 for the grade, but it does have a lot of scuffs. I'm not experienced with grading this series, so I may be wrong. That's a great eagle!

I'll say this just in case please don't clean this coin as doing so will decrease its value. 1874-P $10 is a scarcer date in the Liberty Head Eagle series.

Cleaning coins is one of the biggest mistakes a novice collector can make.

Appears genuine and around AU50 or so. Keep it safe and maybe buy an Air-Tite or KoinTain holder for it.

AU condition, seems authentic and problem free. Fine to leave it in the current container - just make sure to hold it by the edges to avoid fingerprints and, obviously, never clean or rub it.

Authentic AU-50. It holds a special place because you received it from Grandma. I do hope you are able to keep it in your own collection.

At least AU-50, perhaps 53. Don't see any real problems.

Hi,
Thanks for all your knowledgeable advice and input.
Actually, "moxking" isn't so far off. I stayed with my Grandma when I attended a university close to where she lived. She was at the end of her life and in declining health. She was in her mid 90's and couldn't do a lot of stuff so I helped her in all ways I could.
One day, just out of the blue, she gave me this box with this coin in it. I think it was her way of saying "thank you", but at that time (young and dumb, ya know?) I had no idea the significance of this gesture. She not only gave me a piece of family history but she gave me a piece of American history.
I left for a short time to take a girlfriend home one afternoon and that was it. When I came home she had died. She was 96.
She once said to always remember:
-The Power of Kindness -The Dignity of Simplicity -The Success of Perseverance -The Wisdom of Patience -The Force of Truth
I have never forgotten those words! One wise old lady she was.
Thanks again for all your help.
