I am completely new to coin collecting and I've found a 2015 penny with what looks like two D marks on it. Has anyone else found this yet? :3

It's probably just a hit, but it could be a dropped letter. This happens when a letter is filled with solidified grease (in this case the mintmark), which falls out and gets between the planchet and die during striking (a strike-through). Is it incuse?

I wasn't too sure of what incuse meant but I Googled it and it kinda looks like what they had examples of. Here's a (hopefully) better picture of the coin from a different angle and light.

guess my phrase was strange. Is the 2nd D recessed (below the surface of the coin) or is it raised like the other letters on the coin?

Can you get a close up pic of the "extra" D?

I have my hopes up for a dropped letter, but if there is raised metal around it, it may just be a stamp.
Rest in Peace

I'm uncertain on this one. Usually this kind of question results in a plating issue or PMD (Post Mint Damage).

But that second D looks so much like the first one that I can certainly understand your questioning it.

Maybe Coop will come by with a definitive answer.

A closer image would be a great help. If it is incuse, then it might be a dropped letter. If it is level with the surface, it maybe a stain. It can't be raised as RPMs ended with the retirement of the mint mark punches after 1989. So an image of that area might tell more.

Sorry guys, this is the best I can do without the picture starting to look grainy. :c If you shine it in bright light the second D seems to disappear but then in regular lighting it is very noticeable.

Although it looks very much like a D, it may just be a stain. I know you said it's recessed, but it doesn't really look like it in those pics. Tell you what- take a wood toothpick (make sure it's wood) and run it lightly over the D. Is it flat, or does it dip down?

So it sounds more like a stain than an incuse dropped letter. The curved mark maybe the rim of a coin and the mint mark is upside down?
