I picked this up at the St Louis Coin Show yesterday. Thoughts on grade and VAM?

This one is confusing to me, but I've never been a good grader to begin with. It looks like a really weak strike when you look at the cotton bols, but the detail seems to be spot on, which is contradicting what I just stated. The fields seem fantastic, but the coin in general has a weird looking surface. Is it just basic frost breaks?

Well, if you don't let the blotted/washed out look take away from the coin, I would say an easy 64, maybe even MS65. But again, take it with a grain of salt because I stink at this game.

Nice looking coin I would say if the coin looks as clean in hand as the pictures suggest, it is a candidate for an MS-65. Nice clean fields with very small facial marks , the reverse is also sharp and clean. As for PL designation, from the pics I would say no, the obv does not look as frosty as the reverse- and we all know the reverse doesn't count ! But from my gut feeling that the pic does not do it justice I would say Yes MS-65 PL. I will go with VAM-70.

Tights and Infinite ... that strange look to the surface is due to my photographic skills. They are a work in progress. It's very clean and the devices are sharp. I was thinking MS64. I'm going to wait until Bryan or SuperDave looks at the coin before revealing VAM information. Suffice it to say, It's a strange duck!

PS - I also picked up an MS63 Peace 1926-S VAM4 (extra berry) in a seller's common silver dollars. I was amazed at how many sellers don't bother to look. When asked, they said they didn't care. I wish I had more time to look. That 1878 was in a roll of 78's, five others had B-1 reverses.

If it's VAM-70, the doubling is pretty mushy for that VAM. Frankly, it looks like the doubling on my VAM-80A:

Have a look at LIBERTY for doubling:

SuperDave,

You have earned your Screen name! My first thought was VAM70 ... the doubling is more pronounced than I could capture in the photo. Upon further review, there were some anomolies. The doubling is too East/West, vice North/South in a true VAM70. Liberty is also doubled as well as the stars to the right of the date (also note the die crack there). The clincher is on the reverse ... the die chip in the eagle's right wing. I purchased "another" VAM82. I guess this is an upgrade because the first is AU.

Quick question for the expert: Have you seen doubling in "RIB" on all the B1 reverse examples? My first VAM82 had no doubling of "RIB".

And another footnote ... the five other B1 reverse coins in this dealers roll were VAM79.

I will say VAM-80 also and to tell you the truth I think is one of the harder B1's to find, atleast for me this second time of building my B1 collection. I only have one VAM-80 and have atleast 3 of every other example of B1 Reverse including the 70 and 79 (which is supposed to be the hardest to find)

Bryan,

It's a VAM82. It has a complete nostril and the die chip marker on the eagle's right wing.
