I am currently in the middle of a dispute with a buyer who claims he did not receive his items. I did not have tracking on the shippments and I beleive paypal will return him his money. I beleive he received his items and is taking me for a ride. This is my first dispute in over a year of sales and it is leaving a bad taste in my mouth. My question is does anyone really add tracking to all of there shipments? I would have to raise my cost by almost $3.00 U.S. and I will loose most of my sales because of this increase. Should I continue to risk shipments with no tracking or is there a better way?
Thanks.

Welcome to CCF...

Paypal will return the buyer their money... Anytime you sell anything either without tracking or the tracking does not show delivery, the buyer will win...

That being said, it all depends how risk averse you are... People will claim non delivery on items that are delivered, and sometimes, items actually will not be delivered... I recently had a quite valuable package, an international registered parcel show as being delivered... A few days later, one of my neighbors dropped it off, it had been left, unsigned for, in their box...

What happened to you happens to all. We TRACK everything, no exceptions. Scammers darn near killed our ebay account.
Sorry but unless you want to make a federal case out of it and involve Postal Inspectors .....you lose.

Why will you lose most of your sales if shipping increases by $3? What is the average cost of the items you are selling? What is the cost of the items sold in this particular situation?

It seems you have to either track everything to protect yourself, or skip tracking with the understanding that you are assuming the risk of getting scammed.

Yes, I use Tracking/delivery confirmation with every package I ship. It is a "must do" in this day and age.

You absolutely must use tracking/delivery confirmation to protect yourself, and your standing, with ebay and PayPal. That is a fact of the ecommerce world we live in.

You can get some price relief on your shipping costs if your print your shipping labels through ebay or by using one of the online postage suppliers like stamps.com.

Welcome to the CCF family!

Tracking is a must. I supply tracking with every package I have sent -- This includes several things I've sold on ebay for less than $10.

No tracking means 100% of the risk is on you.
Your choice which is cheaper, the occasional small chargeback or tracking on every packsge

Sorry to hear you're going to lose on this transaction. It's possible that the item wasn't delivered, but more likely the buyer noticed there wasn't tracking on the package and is taking advantage of you. It's terrible that we now live in such a world, but many would rather cheat someone out of their item/sales money than be honest. I've received packages before that weren't tracked and though to myself, this seller is setting themselves up for losses. The only way I'd ever dispute a charge in such an instance is if the package wasn't delivered, but everyone isn't like that. I used to ship sometimes without tracking, but the more I thought about the fact that someone could take advantage of me, I decided it was best to just track everything, if the seller didn't want to pay the extra cost of shipping/delivery confirmation they could pass on my items.

I am mostly selling low to mid grade 90% silver halves, Barbers, Walkers, Franklins, and Kennedys. My listings are usually between $9.00 and $12.00 each so the pricing is pretty competitive. I have since added shipping cost to all my listings and some have sold, so maybe it wont be so devastating to my ebay sales,we'll see.
Thanks for all the advice.

I agree with the consensus, tracking is a necessity. I expect it on anything I receive and would use it for anything I ship.

I make large amounts of purchases on the internet. Most all shipment is done with tracking. As a buyer, if a shipment is late tracking helps with locating the package. On average less than 5% of shipments have been late. Often times it was error on the Postal service and not the seller. Tracking is a good communication tool for the seller.

You MUST use tracking with ebay or you'll get burned. I don't care if it's $10, I'd pay it.

Not sure how your shipping but for me to ship something <= 3oz it costs $2.54 first class/thick envelope with tracking on ebay.

If you mail via First Class, which is typical for most single or few coins sales, insure your "package" is at least 1/2" thick (stick s peanut or wad of paper in the envelope). If so, it goes first class package, which costs a little bit more, but it automatically has tracking and $50 insurance.

All priority mail has tracking and $50 insurance at no cost over the actual mailing cost.

As has been suggested use ebay Mail and you can probably save enough to cover outside tracking with ease.

Huh? 1st class package does not include any insurance automatically?

Lately I have been purchasing world coins for my coins from all country set. The price(as I am doing it in avg circulated condition) the price range is from .50 to 3.00. 95% of these come in the us mail as letter post. Occasionally I receive 1 in a scan tracked package. Ive never sold a coin(hoarder)but if I ever do it will be with tracking, as I am honest many are out to get what they can scam.
