That's it, I'm just wondering if all Barber dimes were created reeded. I have a very worn - but not low ball - 1909-D dime that has no reeds. In this case, I don't think photos would help much.

Yep, they are all supposed to have a milled edge. Yours is simply worn down. All except two US silver coins have had a milled edge: the first version of the capped busy half dollar, it had edge lettering, and the 20 cent piece that had a smooth edge. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

On occasion we see coins without reeding that should have reeding.

Almost all of those are a result of edge damage. The most common cause is what is called a dryer (as in clothes dryer) coin. It bounced around enough to flatten the edges.

Silver three piece also has a plain edge.

And all Barber dimes should have a reeded edge. The reeding is created by the collar during the striking of the coin. If the collar is not in place and the coin is broadstruck then there would not be reeding but the dime would most likely be as least a little oversized.

If you look through "junk" silver bins of Barbers, Standing Lib quarters, and even Walking Lib halves you will find plenty of low-grade coins that have virtually no reeding left. I would not assume anything other than wear is the cause. If your dime grades VG or better I would expect at least some reeding will remain, unless the coin has been damaged.
