Have saved up $160 for a Carson City Morgan dollar. The problem is most of the ones I see are pretty low grade with descent price tags. Any suggestions on grade and year for my 1st CC dollar? Low grade isn't a problem...just want to make sure I am not overpaying. Edited by MontCollector 03/08/2016 01:08 am

I would try to save just a little bit more and get a common date certified GSA. These can often be had for about 215-220 on ebay and I find them to be a little cheaper at a show. It's a great part of history and you get a nice mint state coin for not much more.

Agree with all. Definitely go for the GSA CC Morgan dollar. You can find one on ebay for under $200. I wouldn't worry as much about the certification of it as the coin in the holder. Everyone should have a GSA CC Morgan, at least one.

I agree with everyone above. Going for that GSA dollar in way nicer grade than a "common" circulated issue is the way to go. Save another $30-$50 and you will have a prize you will enjoy forever.

If you stretch for that GSA dollar be sure to shop around. There are big differences in number and severity of surface marks between coins that are similarly priced. If you are patient you can find an example with superior eye appeal.

Thanks for the advice guys! Sounds like a GSA coin is the way to go. I have made my decision to try and get a 1883cc 1st (to fill a hole so to speak). If this doesn't pan out look for a GSA one. There is a little shop about 70 miles away that the owner collects and sells coins on the side. He usually lets me pick through what I want of his private stock. Think I will give him a call. Nice thing about his is he doesn't look for VAMS. Never know what you will get. Scored a MS63 1884o that ended up being a VAM 10 (hot 50 VAM) for $35.

You might want to save a little more as you could pick up a NGC graded GSA 82CC, 83CC, or 84CC in MS63 PL with frosty details for about $250. You will not be disappointed as there are some wonderful CC PL coins.

You want to buy the GSA MorganCC in the box with all paperwork. You could probably get a 1884CC GSA for $200 in the box. Why buy a circulated coin when you can buy a GSA that is just like money. However, if you buy it for $200 from a coin dealer you are not going to be able to sell it for $200 unless you can retail it yourself. If you sell to a dealer I bet he would pay you half that much since he/she wants to make a buck. If you have ebay account and are willing to take pictures and pay all the little fees you could sell it on ebay. I don't think I would drive 140 miles round trip just to buy one pretty common coin. I am sure you can buy one off ebay but you must be sure it is GSA and comes with box, slab and all paper. You must live in a small town. I wonder how much it costs to sell a $200 coin on ebay?

I know the feeling, closest coin shop to me is 35 mins at least. Except pawnshops and they are ridiculous. Never fails they will price higher than grocerys not budge and say I bought this when gold/silver prices were sky high.

Absolutely agree with mox and others. Don't cheap out for $50 bucks or so.

I did go look at that little shop as we needed groceries and dog food anyways. Yes nearest Grocery store is just down road from shop about 70 miles. While he had quite a few, you guys were right in saying I wouldn't be happy with a circulated one. The only MS one he had was a 1891 that was over $500 and ungraded.
I did set myself back by $30 and had to buy a nicely toned 1883-o. It is circulated but toning is awesome. Will post pics in a while.
