I came across this one today. How can it be determined if it is a die issue or mechanical? Thanks, Robert

There doesn't seem to be any flat "shelfing" that I have seen associated with mechanical. What about it makes you say it looks mechanical, please? Thanks, Robert

Interesting. The 2016-D cents along with any of the 2016 coins are barely into circulation. Lets see what the CCF members think.

When the edge of the bust is affected, it is usually machine damage to the coin. Usually the doubling is just inside the bust outline area. 1955 is one of the years that show the hub doubling on the bust just inside the outside area: Note it is not on the outside edge of the bust's design? 1984 doubled ear show doubling on part of the beard: Note again, the area is inside the bust design. 1964-D DDO dime: 1966 DDO half dollar: The doubling again, just inside the busts outline. So when we see it on the outside of the bust, then it is usually machine damaged. (die bounce and die movement slides across and alters the outside edge of the bust 1964-D side by side MD Lincoln Cent:

My opinion is that the pictures you supply from Wexler, the '64 Dime, and the '66 half dollar support that this could be hub doubling, and I thought so as soon as I read the submitted references. I am now attaching more pics of other coins that I found last evening. I am hopeful that it is obvious in the pics that these are 3 different coins, all with the same doubling. (I am now starting to wonder if this ins't on ALL of them?) Thought on this submission? Thanks, Robert

I have now found a 4th one. I am not posting another pic, it looks the same as the others.. At this point, I am guessing this is going to be a staple "feature" of the 2016-D cent.

I have one also and it is that way. Now if we hand a Philly example, then we would know if it is master die doubling for this year or not? ADDEDLooking at my coin there also appears to be some also on the right side of the 2 also. Does you coins show this?

YES!, Mine do indeed have the doubling on the 2 and I missed it! GOOD EYE COOP! I have only got 3 of the four coins left that I can check, but yes all three have the same 2 as your picture.... So it is going to be a "feature" ... :)

Now if we can see if the same thing is going on with the Philly ones, then we will know it is a master die issue or not? If not, then it maybe just a master die issue from the Denver mint coins.

Thanks for the answer. I contacted John Wexler to see if he heard about this or not yet. Waiting for an answer. Will post it when it comes in. Just got this message from John now: Richard,
You are the first to mention anything to me about this.
John

If others that have found the 2016-D would post their results, that would be helpful.

The 2016D's haven't made it to my neck of the woods yet. It'll be nice to have some information on this for when they do.

We have about 97 per cent Denver coins here. They get carried in by the snow birds.
