I having some white balance issue with these photos. The color is a deep chocolate brown. But this is the photo, which I have taken, that looks the most like coin in hand.

The Massachusetts cents and Half Cents were issued in 1788 and '89. They were the best made of all of the Confederation era pieces. The mint that made them was owned by state. It shut down abruptly when the Massachusetts General Court (the name for their legislature) found out that it cost more to run the mint than the face value of the coins it produced. If you are a cynical resident or former resident of the Bay State, you will say, "Things never change."

Have a go at the grade.

Whatever the grade - and it should be 'up there' it's a beauty. Sure would proud to have it in my collection.

A 'wow!' example of Ryder 1-D, URS-10.
Bowers notes ' several mint state coins are known'.
This is one of them. Fantastic coin.

PCGS graded this piece AU-58. I think that the coin is a Mint State piece, and I paid close to "MS-60" money for it. The fields have all the attributes of a brown copper Mint State coin. They have full, unbroken luster with no dull spots and no black or green spots. With a 10 X glass, you can find some crud in the devices, but it's not serious.

My grade is MS-62, but the late Roger Cohen, who wrote the book on Half Cents, told me a couple of times that ownership adds 5 points to the grade. Perhaps this time it's four points.

I have this coin's little sister, a 1788 Half Cent, that I'll post up later in the day.
