I bought this coin about 25 years ago when I visited my girlfriend in New Orleans at her parents house.

She's from a small town south of New Orleans. I saw a coin shop and decided that I had to get a New Orleans Morgan dollar, so we went in. I liked this one so I bought it. After we left I told my girlfriend that the guy was drunk. She said that he wasn't to which I replied that he was slurring his speech. She said "no, he's a Cajun and that's how they talk". At any rate, I figured that I'd share it because of the unusual slab. Note the grade is MS63.8. I wonder what NGC or PCGS would grade it today.

That is a very good souvenir!

I think it would get a higher grade -- but I'm lousy at grading.

I think it could upgrade to MS63.9.

But seriously, a nice looking Morgan and cool personal history for you.

From those pics I'd call it a solid 64 with a good shot at 65. If the pics aren't hiding anything I'd say 65 all day long. That is one heck of a strike for an O mint morgan

IF you go to sell it, be sure and put Compugrade in the title and clearly in the listings, the slabs are historical and are (slightly) collectable themselves.

I'll never sell it. I can't remember when/where I got most of my coins, so this one's a keeper for sure.

I'd agree with Cascade. Even if you never intend to crack it, and I don't think anyone would ever suggest that you should after hearing your story, it's at least a 64 today with a really super shot at a 65 from what I can see.

I agree with at least a MS-64 grade. Awesome story, you should get a nice little wooden display box for it to set out and give ya a good conversation piece.

I always liked these, and I find the ones that have the decimal point grade in the actual label and not just on the serial number even more interesting. In my opinion these were the best slab shells ever made. They are small like the early ANACS slabs, made of a heavier denser plastic that give them a nice neft in your hand, clear like the PCGS slabs, and have a top reading label on the slab so you can tell what is in them without removing them from the box.
