Maybe just the lighting but it looks like someone touched up the silver. Otherwise the coin looks OK but has a weak reverse strick.

I was up late one night (around 4am) looking for all kinds of crap on ebay. Came across this coin, bid on it, and won the auction for 25$ CAD. It looked nice and a few others bid on it so I took my chances! Any info I can get is appreciated and when I receive the coin I will post pictures with different lighting.

Thanks for the help

It gives the appearance of being struck rather than cast, which favors its being authentic. The small crack at about 7 o'clock (also visible at 5 o'clock on the other side) also backs up this impression. The reverse looks as if the die may have been in a far more advanced state of wear than the obverse one, which is not too uncommon a circumstance. I'd tentatively say it's genuine in the absence of any evidence to the contrary (such as too light a weight, being attracted to a magnet, et cetera).

Lucky,

Thanks for the info!

The seller listed some of the info: Coin weight: 3.43 grams - Diameter: 19mm.

Heres the add..

Ps. I did not pay 25$ for shipping haha

struck with a very worn reverse die, but I think that is genuine (see the edge cracks)

Those numbers don't seem to be out of line.

One other comment with regard to the portrait - the brow is very pronounced. I wonder if there could be an implication in that, perhaps something only a Roman of the period would get the meaning of.

Ya that eyebrow is a bit thick!

It's challenging to find a coin (genuine) with that much detail on ebay for that price. The picture of Elagabalus looks interesting, my students will be fascinated.

Did I pay a fair price? What's the potential value? Is it worth getting slabbed?

Thanks everyone

Ty

I very much like the coin and the price you paid. It is obvious that the reverse die was near it's final death, but the obverse makes up for that lack.

Moxking, I couldn't resist that beautiful portrait haha

I wish ancients were similar to modern coins were a minting "weak strike" (seller listed it as weak strike) would increase the value of the coin.......I guess Il keep dreaming...
