Never seen a tombac tarnish like this... Any thoughts? The color is very accurately represented ( no funny light modification or anything like that) The coin is a proper weight and it's non Magnetic like it's supposed to be... Edited by XWLCoins 03/16/2016 9:29 pm

The only thing I can think of is that maybe this coin was exposed to some sort of chemical or solution that caused such a reaction.

I've seen quite a few on ebay and I had a couple myself. My theory is that Tombac reacts differently in different climates such as salty air so maybe from collection far east or west canada.

When you guys say a white wash, do you mean dipped like in a copper or silver dip solution..?

Silver wash old school means a coating may have been applied, or created by "pickling" in acid to bring out the surface silver through enrichment..so I've read.

Yes, dipped in a silver dip a few times, leaving a silver sheen. The translucent layer would appear to fade the darker tombac giving it a soft mottled appearance. I've never tried this but in my dibble-dabble into oil painting, it seems highly possible and the slightly silver effect is quite noticeable on this coin.
