So this was an accidental discovery. If that's even true. Look at the discoloration. Copper? I don't know.  |

I think it's more likely to be rust coming through from the steel planchet.

I Agree on the magnet test. Also as John says, many 43's were copper plated after it left the mint.  |

I agree, probably rust or some other stain. Is it magnetic? What is the weight?

that would be my ultimate collection... 1943 steel set, 1943 copper error, 1944 steel error... then a 1909-S v.d.b. in MS64 or higher, and then the 1974 and 1975 aluminum cents... I would quit coin collecting after that because it would be hard to top that... oh who am I kidding... I would be collecting even harder after that...

Rust or a stain, it's likely something acidic (soda) got on it and ate off the plating.

This came from a roll of steel wheaties. 2 were exposed to a non acidic environmental friendly solution. Only this cent changed. That's all the info I have. Is there something to test copper like testing gold and silver?
