This is the one I paid a net $38 for. Those of you that know what NGC gave it, give your own opinions. The obverse is incredibly strong compared to the reverse, likely due to the careful preparation of the obverse die in this variety. I could not be happier as this will look great in my type set without breaking the bank. Sorry about the glare in the pictures. It is hard to take pictures of coins in TPG slabs without the proper setup. Edited by TypeCoin971793 03/19/2016 12:58 pm

I think the best I could do on this one is F-12. I know the weakness is probably strike related. If the reverse was as strong as the obverse, I could see low VF.

I don't know how you managed to buy that coin for $38. Usually you get a disk of copper with a shadow of an obverse image on it for that kind of money. All I can say is "WOW!" and "lucky you."
As for the grade, the color looks great, and the obverse is really nice for a well circulated 1794 large cent. I would grade the obverse as a Fine although I imagine that most here will call it a VF. There are a few ring dings, but the surfaces are smooth and brown, and coin is not porous. That is huge and more than off sets the ring dings in my opinion.
As for the reverse, that might be due to strike, but is more likely due the delicate of the lettering and the lack of a protective upset rim to protect the devices. I guess it's bad form to post up a Mint State or AU example (depending upon your grading point of view) of a 1794 cent to show everyone why so many 1794 cents have incomplete reverse lettering. I don't want to upstage you right now. I'll address that later.
As for a grade, I'm guessing that NGC gave it a VG. NGC tends to be very liberal when they grade these coins. I've seen examples they called EF, that I'd be hard pressed to call Fine-VF. So if NGC graded "Fine" I would not be surprised. EAC would say Good - 6 with fantastic surfaces and color, and you would end up paying VG to Fine money.

Yes, I think I would be happy too. And seeing it now up close, I believe it is almost better than the 1798 you sold. Interesting coin: F12 to F15 obverse and AG3 reverse. Some disparity is not unusual in old cents, specially flowing hairs where obverses tend to be stronger than the reverses, but this is more than the usual. Still a very worthy coin for sure.

Just can't see enough of the reverse to judge. I'll stab at F-12.

What you see on the reverse is all you can see. It is nearly obliterated.

I can see the Rim Damage designation I missed that one on the initial review, but not the G grade.

They were very harsh on the obverse.
I'd call it EAC 7/5
