Please grade, 1839 Silly Head Large Cent N-9. The color is better in hand. It was difficult to photograph because it is lacquered.

All coins that have any type of alteration to the original surfaces would receive the details designation. In this case lacquer would qualify it as altered.

I'm a very picky collector who doesn't like "details" coins. I wouldn't have a problem owning this coin and am not convinced it is "details". Looks like mineral oil rather than lacquer.

[quote]All coins that have any type of alteration to the original surfaces would receive the details designation. In this case lacquer would qualify it as altered./quote] I figured that was why. I think it is a gray area. I have heard both opinions. Any alteration counts as details is one camp. The other camp I have heard argued is that the lacquer does not dammage the coin, and that the application of lacquer was a habit of collectors in the early days so...the coin gets a pass. I think I have seen lacquered coins in graded TPG holders...? Or did those holders have altered surfaces printed on them...hmmm.
