I just picked up this 1921 Morgan dollar and was curious to know what grade it most likely would be. Thanks for the help! Image: Image1.jpg80.21 KB Image: Image2.jpg81.8 KB

Hard to tell from those scans alone, but looks like MS63 to me.

Thanks for replying so quickly.. I tried to scan it in as best as I can. Unfortunately I don't think my digital camera has a macro on it.. I will try and get a better image this weekend and try to post it.

Your camera doesn't need macro to take a shot of what we need for semi-accurate grading. As long as it will focus from about 6-12 inches and maybe zoomed in a little, you will get the needed results. Lighting is the key, as well as your white balance. From the scans, I really can't tell if that's marks on the cheeks and in front of the face or not. The fileds look pretty good. I would venture a guess at MS64 right now, but it can easily go down with better pictures. Oh, and welcome to the forum.

Oh, boy! A 1921! I like the coin. However, the scan can't catch the small differences between an Almost Uncirculated coin and a Mint State coin - that's mostly about the highest points of the strike - so I hesitate to grade based on a scan. If Uncirculated, I'm thinking MS64, and a nice one at that. Here's something to look for. Check the reeding. I can see a little bit in the scans, but not enough to say for sure. Which pic does it resemble? The lower pic is what they call Infrequent Reeding, a lower reed count exclusive to 1921's. Those are fairly rare and of interest to the collector. If you have an Uncirculated example of one, it's going to have considerable value.

Very nice coin. I would have to agree on MS63-64.

From the picture provided, I would guess an ms64 shot ms65 coin.

Thank you for all the responses. I have attempted to get some more photo's of the coin. SuperDave was mentioning Infrequent Reeding, so I tried to get some side shots of it as well, if it's still hard to see, I will try getting a closer up picture this weekend. Please let me know what everyone thinks about the grading of the coin now with some different pictures. AU58. I'm not sure if that's wear or rub on the high points. To be honest, in this grade range, it's value is that of a simple bullion coin.

I kinda agree with Prethen. These common date Morgans are plentiful in uncirculated condition (MS60-63). You may be able to get a few dollars over melt for them. You can get one on ebay for about $20

Now that I can see all of those scratches, I'd say MS60 at the most.
